Push backs
Push backs—also called friction backs—are the most familiar and convenient option. A well-made back grips the post firmly, while a double-notched post provides an additional stopping point. They are comfortable, quick to put on, and easy to replace.
Their principal disadvantage is that the gripping mechanism can loosen through repeated use. The wearer should periodically test the backs and replace any that slide too easily.
Screw backs
Screw backs offer additional protection because the backing must rotate along a threaded post before it can come off. This makes them useful for valuable earrings or for customers particularly concerned about loss.
However, they are not loss-proof. A screw back can gradually loosen if it is not tightened properly. Threaded posts may also be uncomfortable for sensitive ears and harder to manipulate.
